Wonderful Webkinz: Toys for Kids by Paul Banas
The Webkinz are coming! Like hundreds of other fad toys before them, parents are hearing more about Webkinz these days, not from the news, but from their kids on the playground. Webkinz are yet another, not especially cute, plush animal. They come in all varieties, including ponies, pandas, monkeys, unicorns, and dogs. Manufactured by Ganz, the Webkinz retail for around $14-$15, when you can find them. What makes them different though is their “secret code” ID that is imprinted on their collar tag. The ID gives the owner a free year of access to Webkinz World, a site created just for kids. Webkinz World has games, contests and a virtual version of the their real stuffed animal. It also includes a “social networking” functionality that is safe for kids because they are limited to pre-set phrases to communicate.
Much like a Tamagochi, the hit toy a few years back for high tech kids, the online Webkinz pets use artificial intelligence to simulate living creatures. Kids actually report back that the pets are “kind of alive.” If you had or have a tamagochi in the house, you probably wondered whether it was good for the child, when you weren’t scheming how to end its endless beep-beeping.
Is a Webkinz like a pet? Should you let your child get in on this phenomenon?
Pros
* The Webkinz fluffy animal is not a real pet and doesn’t shed, eat food, bite, bark, wet, need a walk, or inconveniently die.
* Webkinz world may be more attractive than “shoot ‘em up” computer games
Cons
* The child’s imagination and creativity is limited by the software.
* Danger of online community taking the place of face-to-face play date interaction.
* Commercialization – Webkinz is a commercial toy, as you would expect.
* The parent should be aware that the purchase of the toy only includes a one year access to the site.
All things considered, dad may find this to be a fairly safe way to teach basic computer involvement to a small child and relatively harmless. At the same time, dads should make sure they feel comfortable with the Webkinz stories and that they are aligned with the family’s values.
There’s nothing that says that game play is better or worse when done on a computer versus on the floor with a board game.

Webkinz are the hottest toy no one can find, making these plush stuffed animals worth more than a cheap tank of gas. Webkinz are small stuffed animals that were introduced by the Ganz gift company in 2005. They are still to this day becoming more and more popular with kids and parents everywhere in the world. Webkinz are similar to the ever so popular Ty Beanie Babies in that some are retired after so many have been sold to try and keep high after market selling prices. Like ty beanie babies before them, Webkinz are cute little stuffed animals with catchy little names. The difference between the two is that webkinz come with a personalized website. Last time I checked my handy little search term suggestion tool, the term “webkinz” had more than three quarters of a million searches. Those kind of numbers indicate gigantic demand. Even better is that demand is expected to increase over the next year. The question all Internet Marketers want to know is, “how can I cash in on this hot topic?”
Here are some of the ways I found for cashing in on the webkinz craze.
1) Website add-ons. Since each and ever webkinz toy comes with a personalized website, why not sell add-ons for the website? The only catch is that the add ons have to be really simple to add on. You could even just give add-ons away for free in exchange for building a targeted mailing list and a high traffic, adsense laden website. 2) Webkinz forum. You can start a discussion forum for the parents of kids who own webkinz. The traffic should be very easy to monetize in the form of affiliate offers, referral, banner and adsense ads. Remember that its difficult to monetize traffic that mostly consists of young children. Therefore if you’re going to build a website that doesn’t directly sell webkinz, make sure the traffic is for adults. 3) Special report. Put together a special report titled “What you need to know before you buy webkinz.” You can easily advertise such a report through Google adwords for cheap. For the content of the report all you need to do is research some of the criticisms of webkinz, for example. Then all you would have to do persuade the reader that the criticisms are really not all that valid and include some affiliate links of webkinz. The report could easily be about anything a parent might want to know about webkinz before buying them for their kids. You could even show parents where to get webkinz at a big discount. As of this writing, no one has put together such a report. The 4) Find a webkinz wholesaler. If you can find a webkinz wholesaler you can easily resell those webkinz on ebay for double or triple what you paid. Finding a wholesaler is actually fairly easy. All you need to do is type in the term “webkinz wholesale” into ebay. You should find more than dozen sellers selling wholesale information. Make sure though that person selling the information is actually selling webkinz. If not, you are probably buying crap information 5) Webkinz blog. All you need to do is write reviews of the different webkinz products every day or every other day. Doing this should easily draw lots of traffic to your blog like moths to a porch light. Once you get the traffic you can monetize it by giving away the report you compiled, selling your own wholesale information, or by posting recommendations and adsense ads. 6) Create your own info product. Once you have started making some money from your different webkinz endeavors, you should have no problems compiling an info product offering your “secrets.”
So there you go. Six great ways you can use to cash in on the webkinz craze. If you are interested in making money from webkinz I should warn you that time is definitely a factor. Webkinz may be gaining in popularity but the chances are very high that the popularity of webkinz will be short lived. I would say that you probably have an eighteen month to two year window. So whatever you are going to do, do it soon or you could lose out.

Webkinz are very popular plush stuffed toy animals that were released by the Ganz company in 2005. The toys are very similar to other stuffed animals you may have seen, but one very unique feature is that they come packaged with a special code on their labels that you can use to gain access to the “Webkinz World” website and adopt an online digital version of your pet for interaction with others. There are also smaller mini versions of Webkinz called Lil’ Kinz. Ganz also recently released Webkinz trading cards as well.
Webkinz are similar to the ever so popular Ty Beanie Babies in that they are retired after so many have been sold to try and keep high after market selling prices. Webkinz have been extremely popular so far, with over two million units sold to merchants and one million registered users of the Webkinz website.
There have been many reports of some retired Webkinz selling for hundreds of dollars after they have been retired. Even some rare ones including some of the originals that didn’t have the “W” stitched on them that go for over $1,000! Make sure to get your favorite Webkinz before their retired.
